Shower Glass: Handles + Knobs
Now that you’ve selected the type of custom shower glass you’ll be installing, it’s time to pick your shower door handle or knob. A small item in the scheme of an entire bathroom design or renovation, but an element you’ll touch on a daily basis.
Door Handle Dimensions:
If you would like the flexibility of easily replacing or switching the style of your door handle in the future, pick a standard 6” or 8” door pull. Handle dimensions are typically measured from center-to-center of the mounting holes, therefore, the overall door handle may be significantly larger than in the dimension listed in the product title. Always look for the overall handle length within the product description or cut-sheet.
Door Handle Placement:
For door handles, I typically place the center of the handle 3” from the edge of the glass.
The height above the ground has a bit more to consider. Typically, I start by placing the center of a door handle around 42” above the finished bathroom floor (when standing outside of the shower). The typical 6” or 8” center-to-center span of the door handle will allow comfortable use for a variety of heights, but the vertical dimension can easily be adjusted based on the client’s preferences.
Doorknob Placement:
To start, I place the center of the doorknob 3” from the edge of the glass. If the doorknob is on the wider side, I will then move the knob very slightly towards the middle of the door until it looks appropriately spaced from the edge of the door.
For the height, I start with the doorknob at 42” above the finished bathroom floor (when standing outside of the shower). To test the height, I ask the clients to hold a measuring tape vertically to see what height feels comfortable for daily use. It is not uncommon to move the handle height up or down to accommodate the client’s height or comfort level.
